Description
We grew this for the first time in 2017. Our biggest problem was that we had originally assumed that it was Indeterminate and had so prepared to grow it as a standard cordon plant. It wasn’t until we were doing our final check that we realised it was a Determinate plant and so we had to move it so that we could treat it differently. As a result, it got squashed in to the other Determinate plants and possibly wasn’t given enough room to do as well as it might.
Its a black/dark mahogany Beefsteak and (probably) originates from Russia (it may even be the same variety as Cernomor) and the determinate plant has potato leaves (which we think is slightly unusual). There seems to be a suggestion that a plant can produce around 4lbs of fruit (we got just over 2lbs) and they vary in size significantly (from 4-10 oz). Fruit split if unevenly watered and, as we grow determinate varieties in pots, this was a common problem for us with several fruit being thrown away as they had split and were already going mouldy when we found them.
We will probably try them again but take more care of them and give them more space.
