Tomato Black Zebra

A stripy black standard sized open pollinated tomato on indeterminate plants.

Description

One of the crosses (accidental or deliberate) of Green Zebra this was introduced in around 2000. It looks nice both on the plant and in a salad but the cross with Green Zebra has muted the rich flavours common in a black tomato. In common with Green Zebra it is also quite hard to skin.

We first grew this in 2014 when it didn’t crop particularly well (only about 10 fruit) so it didn’t raise itself to the top of a list for growing again. However, at some stage it has to come back to the top. We have saved our own seed but there is a possibility that it will cross with other varieties.

We grew this again in 2018 and it did relatively well, its flavour remained good but it still wasn’t the most productive of plants. So, it stays there (I like black tomatoes) and its better flavoured than many standard sized black tomatoes.
