Tomato Matina

Medium sized red heritage tomato on an indeterminate plant.

Description

Matina is a mid-sized, red, meaty tomato. The indeterminate, potato-leafed, plants bear medium/large sized, red round fruits early and for a long season. The fruit do not get green shoulders (being red all around the fruit). The flesh is meaty, more like a beefsteak tomato and this, combined with its flavour, makes it ideal for sandwiches where it can hold its own against strong cheddar. Matina makes a perfect BLT!.

In 2012 Matina produced fruit soon after Bloody Butcher and then well on into late October and so was well worth growing, an early tasty tomato.

It is apparently the same cultivar as Tamina being known as Tamina in Europe and Matina in the US (why do we make life even more complicated?), the web seems to suggest that it originates from Germany so why it acquired a different name in the US is a mystery.
