Tomato Red Zebra

Red/Yellow striped medium sized open pollinated tomato on indeterminate plants.

Description

Red Zebra is a medium sized sweet tomato. A red version of the better known Green Zebra, it is slightly more unusual, the fruits are sweet and full of flavour. The indeterminate, regular-leafed plant produces bright red fruit covered in yellow stripes (similar to Tigerella but a bit earlier) in the middle of the season. Probably best grown in the greenhouse. The tomatoes are probably one of the best flavoured of the stripy tomatoes.

It was selected from a field of Green Zebra tomatoes in the late 1990’s and has quickly become a favourite Red tomato. I think I prefer it to the more common Tigerella.

2023 Update: I’ve grown Red Zebra this year from saved seed (as most of my plants). They’ve done well but (and I don’t know if this has always been the case) when using them for cooking its almost impossible to skin them. They’re ripe and tasty but the skin is very tough and “holds-on” to the layers underneath. None of the other cultivars seem to have this issue and I’ll keep an eye out in future years.
