Tomato Sasha’s Altai

A medium sized red heritage tomato on determinate plants.

Description

Sasha’s Altai is an early cropping red tomato (after Bloody Butcher but before Alicante). The determinate (bush) plant produces very good yields of 2-6oz thin skinned, bright red, slightly flattened complex tasting fruit, very similar to Matina. The plants set well in cooler climates (it originates from the Altai mountains in Irkutsk) and produced reasonable quantities of fruit even in 2012 when other plants suffered. An excellent fruit with green shoulders until fully ripe.

Although it is supposed to be a determinate plant, in 2012 we trained it as an indeterminate plant (because we had mis-read the seed packet) and it did perfectly well with a number of trusses up the vine. Admittedly, it didn’t grow as strongly as true indeterminate varieties and only grew to about 5ft high but it seemed perfectly happy growing that way.

We will try it both ways in 2013 and see which does better. (It didn’t seem to make much difference).

The story of their collection is well described Seed Trust

Excellent for preserving, cooking, salads and making tomato juice.
