Tomato Taiko

Small Yellow Plum shaped tomato on an Indeterminate vine.

Description

Grown for the first time in 2018 with seeds from a seed swap, we were interested to see how this grew. We probably didn’t give it a very good chance as (for some unknown reason) we didn’t bother to thin out the side shoots on any of our plants in 2018 so the greenhouses filled with lots of leaves. Nonetheless, the (relatively) small yellow plum tomatoes (similar in shape to Roma or San Marzano but not as large) were acceptable and it cropped reasonably well.

However, our experience with plum tomatoes is that they are more likely to get Blossom End Rot than round tomatoes and this proved to be the case with this variety with 10-15% of the fruit having to be thrown away.

It doesn’t feel like one that I will grow again, there are equally good Yellow Plum tomatoes out there (Ildi for example) which don’t seem to get BER in the same way.
