Tomato Roma

Elongated red medium sized heritage tomato on compact indeterminate plants.

Description

Roma is one of the most common and prolofic Italian cooking tomatoes. is fleshy, sweet plum tomato with few seeds. Shorter and stockier than San Marzano, the flesh is thinner and it has a strong, sweet and more acidic taste. Ideal for cooking or canning. The indeterminate, regular-leafed plant produces a heavy mid season crop.

Needs to be staked to get the best benefit. Suitable for indoor or outdoor growing.

We’ve tried this cultivar a number of times and rarely found it very productive (like many of the Italian varieties), so we’ve been looking for alternative, cool climate, cooking tomatoes and so far have found Black Plum and Kibits Ukranian which, although not exactly the same produce a good crop.

So we’ll probably give this one a miss in the future.

The exact opposite of Jim from Dorset who says “My experience with this cultivar here in South Dorset, UK is that it is by far the most productive and reliable tomato I have grown, after trying many others. I find it has a very long cropping season. It is multipurpose, being great for making sauces and great for salad. This is one cultivar that will always have a space in my greenhouse every year.”

Just goes to show that different conditions mean different levels of success even with simple tomatoes.
