Tomato Harbinger

Red, medium sized, heritage tomato on indeterminate plants.

Description

Harbinger is a bright red, sweet, medium sized tomato. The indeterminate, regular leafed, plant produces medium sized round tomatoes over a long period of time, ripening early in the right conditions. It does well indoors but is also suitable for outdoor growing but is not resistant to late blight.

It was introduced in the UK about 1910 and is a traditional English tomato, the thin skinned fruit having good, deep, flavours..

Perfect for salads, sandwiches and cooking, its bright colour adds depth to sauces and complements other tomatoes in salads.

It also ripens well off-the-vine which is good for cooler climates such as the UK.

2023 Update: we haven’t written much about this cultivar for a while because its one of the many red standard sized tomatoes available. A thing we’ve noticed in 2023 is greenback. Greenback isn’t something I’ve noticed much before but, looking on the web, it seems to be made worse by lack of potassium and high temperatures and sunlight. We haven’t moved the greenhouse so I suppose it could be due to the hot, bright June that we had this year. Probably best to grow cultivars that are resistant.
