Orange Plum shaped paste tomato.

Description

Grown for the first time in 2018 with seeds from a seed swap, we were interested to see how this grew.

First of all for some reason, I managed to get them mixed up with the Jaune Flamme tomatoes but, as they were distinctive, managed to sort them out. I don’t know how I got them mixed up.

They cropped reasonably early (mid August) and have been going quite well since then. Like many plum tomatoes they do get Blossom End Rot and so a small percentage of the fruit have been thrown away and not contributed to the overall crop for this year (in some respects that’s not a bad thing as everything seems to be doing well this year and despite reducing the number of plants, it looks like we’re going to get more tomatoes than we know what to do with).

In terms of taste, they are a paste tomato and are much better for cooking than eating raw. However, their colour means that they’re not very good for paste as it makes the sauce less rich (I prefer to use brown/black tomatoes mixed with traditional red).

So, overall, its a debate as to whether I would bother to grow them again, Jaune Flamme is a better small, early orange tomato which both seems to cook and be suitable for cooking and later, my favourite Summer Cider comes into its own with Moonglow also a strong contender.
