Tomato Black Prince

Round, standard sized black heritage tomato on indeterminate plants.

Description

Black Prince is a regular sized (2 – 3 inches), dark red/brown, tomato which grows on vigorous regular leafed indeterminate plants. Both the plants and the fruit can be of variable size (some fruit can be 50% larger). It is very popular for its rich flavour which is excellent both for eating fresh, slicing on sandwiches and for making into rich tomato sauces and other cooking activities.

We have struggled to find regular sized black tomatoes which do well in the cooler climate of the UK. The only other we have grown before is Japanese Black Trifele which is more plum shaped than round and we are hoping that Black Prince will fill this void. Originally from Irkutsk, it is regarded as a true Siberian tomato.

We grew these in 2013 and 2014 and, whilst they did well in 2013, 2014 was a poor year. But then it wasn’t very good for many of our tomatoes. I think I would now rather grow Egyptian (though why I’m not quite sure).
